Rudi Gens:

Undergraduate

Polar Remote Sensing graphics I am developing GIS curricula and training materials for specialized workshops for a consortium of faculty, staff and students from 14 minority serving institutions. This effort is funded by USDA. Preliminary meeting reports are available here.
Polar Remote Sensing graphics For the Earth System Science Education for the 21st Century (ESSE21) funded project, I developed a module on polar remote sensing that is targeted for post secondary students and faculty teaching remote sensing.

Highschool

Litter retriever graphics I contributed to a case study chapter Litter Retriever with a GPS Receiver in the Earth Exploration Toolbook, a collection in the National Science Digital Library and the Digital Library for Earth System Education. This involved the use of GPS technology and Google Earth for the mapping part.
Deforestation graphics I wrote another case study chapter (Shrinking Forest - Growing Problem) in the Earth Exploration Toolbox on deforestation in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. The challenge was to come up with some simple image analysis that works with open source tools.
GIS GPS course graphics GIS and GPS for Alaskan school teachers, is a pre-service and in-service teachers training course that is funded by the Alaska Space Grant Program. For this course I developed and delivered lectures on GPS measurements, and ran the hands-on training on field data capture with GPS.
Barrow High School graphics As a follow up of the GIS and GPS for Alaskan school teachers I helped two participating teachers to implement GPS/GIS exercises at their own schools with their students. Working with Steve Paskvan (math teacher at the West Valley High School in Fairbanks, Alaska) and Tim Buckley (science teacher at Barrow High School in Barrow, Alaska) was a new, fascinating and rewarding experience.

K8 education

Bird's Eye View graphics Alaska: A Bird's Eye View, was the first web based story that I was involved in implementing. This story is written for grades 4-5 and introduces general concepts of remote sensing and facts about Alaska. It is a NASA reviewed education product.
Treasure hunt graphics Treasure Hunt in Alaska, is another web based story where I developed parts of the content and carried out the entire web implementation. This story is written for grades 3-5 and introduces concepts of radar remote sensing and Earth science. It is also a NASA reviewed education product.
